   Official Assignment #1: Zentangle

We have been discussing the first element of Art: Line.  Zentangles take the element of line into a whole new perspective as the artist attempts to combine many creative approaches to line into one visual arts piece.

-We observed how zentangles are made by using line and pattern.  Students observe examples and created their own.

-Assignment #1: Students were asked to create their own zentangle using their new-found knowledge of line, and pattern.

   Official Assignment #2: Continuous Line

Students have been studying line and are now about to embark on a great challenge using chiefly line as their key element.  Continuous line is a fascinating line exercise that brings the artist from the element of line to the element of shapeStudents are asked to complete a several continuous line drawings:

1) drawing of a face

2) drawing of their hand

3) drawing of a scene

Blind Contour

Students have been engaging in continuous line contour drawings.  Today we are doing a practice exercise called Blind contour.  Students will be shown sample pictures of objects to draw.  They are to draw the objects without looking at the paper they are drawing on.  This is an exercise to practice close observation of the model versus simply drawing what you think an object should look like.

Assignment #3: Students are to engage in several Blind Contour activities.  A minimum of 2 of the activities will be handed in.

Click the link below to view the powerpoint used for the exercise today.

Value and Shading

Often visual arts include a third dimension within them, that is, the illusion of 3 dimensions imposed on a 2-dimensional surfaceToday we will observe how value is imposed within Visual Art to create the illusion of third Dimension.

Students are to experiment with pencil and charcoal to create different values.

Assignment #4: Students are to create a value chart with 10 distinct values ranging from complete white to total black.  Although this can be done quickly, it takes concentration, patience, and time to do a thorough job.

Form/Shading/Solids

Assignment #5 - Students are to complete a piece with 5 regular solids using different shades of value to create the illusion of the third dimension on 2-dimensional paper.

We discussed how value can be used for dramatic affect.

Assingment #6: Students printed off sample pictures of black and white landscapes from the internet.  They are to recreate half of the picture using pencils, charcoals, or other options.  A great artist will attempt to make something original in the re-created piece.

Value/Shading without lines

Assignment #7: Students are asked to create a finished piece that includes a minimum of 4 regular solids that use value to create a 3-d effect but...students are not allowed to use line!

Sketching the Human Face

Students have been studying the use of value and line.  Today we are taking the plunge into sketching of the entire human face.  Students are asked to make two drawings of the human face.

Assignment #8

-First we are all going to draw along with the video in class.  Our focus is in getting realistic proportions of the human face.

-Second: students are asked to make a final copy.  They may either make a second attempt of drawing alongside the video, or they may take the proportions learned in the first attempt and draw their own choice of human face.

Stencil Cuts

Students were shown how to use a stencil cutting board and exacto knife to create various artistic projects.

Assignment #10: This is a very open-ended assignment.  Students are asked to create a piece using at least 2 pieces of paper in a stencil format.  Students may create anything from a portrait to an expressionist piece.  Effort and vision are the only keys to success in this assignment (as they are in most)

Painting to Music

Students used water-colour to create paintings to music.

Assignment#11: Students painted to music today.  Students are to engage in their own action of painting to music.  The assignment is to paint to music to at least 5 different pieces of music of the students choosing.  To do this the students needs to choose the five pieces, listen to them whilst painting and then reflect on the painting.  Students must put the name of the artist and song on the back of each piece and be prepared to discuss each work.

Colour Wheel

Assignment #12: Students are to use the primary colours, white, and black acrylic paint to create both a colour wheel and a single colour value scale.  Students are to attempt to create as many variations of colour and shade as they are able in order to fully engage in this activity.

Poster

Students discussed the value of posters including what makes a poster great and what makes a poster not so good.

Assignment #13: Students are asked to create a poster that adheres to all the qualities of a great poster.  They are to aim this poster at advertising a specific event.  They must include all pertinent information about the event.  And finally, the poster must follow basic artistic guidelines such as balance, movement, and many other considerations.

Stencil Cut T-shirt

students have been engaged in projects doing stencil cuts.  Students are now asked to take that skill to the next level and create an article of clothing using stencil cutting to create a work of art on cloth.

Assignment #14: Using stencil cutting materials, transparent plastic, aerosol glue, and fabric paints, create a t-shirt (or cloth sample) with a finished work on it.

Grid-Work Masterpiece

Students have been working on various sketches of models.  They are attempting to capture what is really there as opposed to how they think a scene should look.  To work on this skill students are asked to engage in the "Grid-Work Masterpiece" project.

Assignment #15: Students are asked to find an image that will be used by only them.  Their project is to impose a grid upon the picture they have chosen and then recreate the piece using a similar grid attempting to create perfection.

Assignment #16:  Students are to create one grid section of a large piece that will be selected by the class.  Students are all asked to find a picture for the entire class to engage in with each student taking part in one square of the picture.  For this project the picture should have many details with each section of the picture containing images to be recreated.  This will ensure that each student in the class has ample opportunity to play a key role in the recreation of the total piece.  Once all students have made a selection we will all decide together which picture will be used for the class project.

1 or 2 point perspective

Students have been studying how to get perspective in their artwork.  We have practiced in class how to get a 1 and 2 point perspective work.  Students are to choose one of these methods in order to practice their perspectives.

Assignment #17: Students are to make either a 1 or 2 point perspective drawing.  This drawing may be of anything they choose, however, it must correctly incorporate either a 1 or 2 point perspective to be elegible for full marks.
