*If you cannot open a link or if the assignment you are looking for is not in this list then please ask for help and I will provide you a copy.

*You can ask for help anytime during school hours or contact me at jewert@esd.mb.ca if you have any question.

  Session Name Materials Assignment
Exit slip #1 - intro  -Close attention and exact detailed explanation  -Students are asked to respond the question "What does Mr. E eating chicken have to do with Science this semester?".  Students are reminded that great detail helps to create a complete, fluid explanation.
Video presentation on Energy Flow in the Environment

To be in class and watching the video, also a quiz

Students watched a video on the movement of energy through trophic levels in the environment.  Students were asked to complete a short quiz related to the video.

11.02.08 energy flow video quiz.docx

The Silence of the Frogs -Textbook, pen, paper, a synthesis of thought.

We have been discussing the sustaining ecosystems.  Students are asked to study the specific case of declining frog populations.  Students are to read pages 10-13 of the text and respond to questions 1-5 in understanding concepts"

We also observed a video and a powerpoint in class dealing with this same subject matter.

11.02.15 The Cycle Series quiz.docx

-Students were given the exit slip task of answering the question...

"How is this picture related to the big picture of the carbon cycle?"

Many students fouond it helpful to include pictures similar to the one shown below to assist in their expalnation.

Carbon Cycle questions -textbook, papern pencil Students are asked to read pages 62-65 and complete questions 1-5
Carbon Cycle review -In class discussion, text, youtube, diagrams

-Students reviewed the carbon cycle...

-We discussed the questions from pages 62-65. We observed and explained a diagram.  Then we watched some youtube videos that sum up the concept.

The Oxygen Cycle -video, quiz for video, textbook, paper, pen

-Students are studying cycles in ecosystems and are now learning about the oxygen cycle.  Similar to the Carbon cycle, oxygen cycles throughout ecosystems in many ways.  We watched a video and completed a related quiz to help us study the concept.  Students who missed class today can watch the video on the shared drive when they are at school.  (Ask Mr. E for help with this if you don't know where to find the video)

11.05.02 oxygen cycle film quiz.docx

Candle jar experiment -observed in-class experiment, paper, pen

-Students observed a lab in class.  Students were asked to complete two parts to this assignment:  Students were asked to document the lab in formal scientific lab notation and then respond to the following questions...

1) How does this relate to the rain forest?

2) How does this represent global warming?

3) What could we change so the candle could burn longer within this closed system?

Nitrogen Cycle -in-class viewing of film, film quiz, textbook, paper, pen

-Student watched a video on the Nitrogen cycle and answered related questions to help them prepare for the upcoming test next week.

-click the link below for a copy of the film questions

11.02.22 nitrogen cycle film quiz.docx

-Students were asked to read pages 66-68 and complete questions 1-10

The Carbon Cycle final visit  -in-class video, discussion, and quiz handout

-Students have been studying cycles in ecosystems.  Today we watched a video on the carbon cycle and completed an in-class practice quiz together.

11.04.21 energy flow video quiz.docx

Predator Prey relationship   Students are to observe a simulation of predator and prey relationships.  The video is a fast-paced recording of a digital simulation.  This simulation is based on actual found statistics directly representing predator prey relationships.

-Students are to watch the video and plot the data.  This is done by recording the nubmers of predators, prey, and producer, every 4 sec. of the video.  Then students are to make a line graph displaying their results.

-click the link below to see the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHPzBPQ5Niw&feature=related

-Students must complete their bar chart and follow up with a personal reflection to the question "What does all this mean?" (although the question is fairly open students must be sure to completely explain their thoughts on the topic and properly relate it to the current science curriculum)

-Students also have the option of creating their own simulation using the software provided in the link below.  This allows them to alter the settings and view the changes.

11.02.21 PredatorPrey.zip

Carrying Capacity   Students are studying predator/prey relationship and carrying capacity.  Students are asked to read pages 77-80 and complete questions 1-4
Logging and Forestry -in-class video, discussion,

Students are studying various effects of human society on ecosystems.  Today we are discussing logging and forestry.  We watched a video in class and completed an associated quiz related to the video.  Students were asked to survey pages 114-115 and complete #'s 1-4
