-We discussed how value is used to create the illusion of form when sketching 3-dimensional objects. Students practiced using this skill during class time.

Value

In-class project - pastels, paper
|
-We discussed how value is used in creating form. Using pastels, we experimented with value. Students were asked to represent form without the use of line. This was done using shading/value to represent line.
-Assignment #3 - Implied line using value (charcoal) - Students will create a work without any lines. They will use charcoal to adjust value to create the illusion of form without the use of line.

-Assignment #4 - Recreate an existing work of art that incorporates the use of value to create form. Students find an existing work to print and recreate using either charcoal or pencils.

Using shapes to initiathue form |

-We discussed how shapes can be used to create the original form for sketches. Shapes are usful for getting an immediate feel for size, proportion, and balance.
-Assignment #5 - Recreate 5 human forms and 1 inorganic form using only shapes to create a "thumbnail" sketch.
-Students are provided access to the internet to find sample human poses and on example of an inorganic form (architecture, vehicle, or other smaller objects). Students are asked to print the original picture to coincide their reproduction.

-We observed how perspective is used to create the illusion of 3-d on a 2-d surface.
-Assignement #6 - Create a one-point perspective of 3-d shapes with a centred vanishing point. This project will be shaded using differing values to create the illusion of form.

Painting to Music |

-We have been discussing how colour can be used to affect mood. Today we listened to Holst' musical representation of the planets in our solar system. Students chose not only colour to fit the music but also patterns, brush techniques and many other aspects.
-Assignment #9 - Choose 4 responses of "painting to music" to Holst' "The Planets". Create 4 additional "painting to music" pieces with music of your own choice. Be sure to include a brief write-up telling about each piece of music (to be included with your pieces)

Silhuette a single colourPaintings |

-We discussed how colours can be used to create monochromatic paintings by mixing white and black into the existing paint colour.
-Assignment #10 - Create 3 tints and 3 shades of the colour of their choice. These colours are used to create a background. Then the student superimposes a black silhuette to create a dramatic painting.

-Assignment #11 - Students were asked to create 3 samples of each facial feature with at least sample from an original source.

Self Portrait |

--Assignment #12 - Students were assigned to complete a realistic self-portrait using either a photo of themselves or a mirror. They are to choose whichever supplies they are interested in using to engage in this project.

Stencil cut #1 |

-Students began to experiment with various cuts they could create with the provided materials using not only varying shapes but also depths, and patterns.
-Assignment #13 – use a cutting mat and xacto knife to create a stencil cut with 2-5 layers of design to create a stencil mosaic.

-Assignment #14 –
a) Using the stencil medium create a 3 layer work. Layer #1 is the innermost layer, layer #2 is the middle, and layer #3 is the outermost layer. When put together they will draw the observers eye into the centre of the piece. As the middle of each layer is cut away it becomes negative space.
b) Using the “negative space” that was cut from the first part of this piece students create the inverse of it. By doing this the “negative space” becomes “positive space”.
*Once both pieces are completed they are mounted on a larger paper side-by-side to create a contrasting stencil of “positive” and “negative” space.

-Assignment #15 - Students are to take a digital photograph of themselves and then use photoshop elements to turn it into a stencil cut. This can be printed out and then laid upon othher paper to create a living stencil of their own portrait.

Plaster Hand |
-Plaster of Paris, patience, a steady hand. |
-We observed how plaster can be used to create a mold of an object. Students practiced using plaster of paris by making a plaster caste of their hand.
-Assignment #16 – Students are to create a plaster hand to practice the art of plaster mold. Once complete they are to paint their creation.

Face Masks |
-Plaster of Paris, newspaper, papier mache solution, playdough, etc. |
-Students extended their prior knowledge of plaster and casting to create their own plaster mask. These will later be used as a mold for their second mask out of papier mache.
-Assignment #17 and 18 – Students will create 2 masks complete with paint and any finishing touches necessary to create an engaging finished project.
-Suggestions for the masks include…
- using plaster to create a mask of the artists own face, sand it down smooth and paint.
-using the plaster mask as a base for a papier mache mask.
-building a paper mache mask using wadded paper as a base.
*for all options students are encouraged to use home-made playdough or clay in order to make molded features to create an elaborate mask.

*This is a common rubric used for the student assignments outlined on this wiki. You may note that the focus in on the level of engagement by the student as opposed to the aesthetic quality of the finished work.
*Student are also reminded that their personal portfolio consists of 35% of their final grade as it is considered a major and final project reflecting their engagement in the visual arts. Personal portfolios are expected to contain a minimum of 25 hours of work and must include a range of at least 5 different genres, forms, or mediums of visual art.
*All portfolios MUST be handed in by Nov. 12 in order to be included in the final assessment of Term 1.

-Many students struggle to decide what to include in their portfolio. -Many students have enjoyed the various portraits we have done in class. Here is another representation using Photoshop Elements. By taking an original photo and using the filter options the student creates a guide to gradient painting. Ask Mr. E for help with using this program.

-Using only one colour to put the focus on a certain item can create a dramatic effect to a picture. Students are encouraged to use this to create an original piece. They may wish to find an existing picture to recreate and then highlight the single object by making it the only coloured object in the piece.

-Faces can be created using even the most minimal of lines. Recreate 5 of these styles to make your own minimal faces using water colour.

-Monochrome can be used to create a certain affect in a picture. Students are encouraged to experiment with monochromatic qualities using photoshop elements to creater original photo art. These can also easily be used as a model for paintings. Ask Mr. E for help with this to create your original.
